This novel was fantastic and is the first novel in a long time that did not disappoint me.

It's true--I'm a literature snob insofar is that I want a book to engulf my mind and imagination when I read. I want these characters and their experiences to live on in my imagination for years after I've read the book. However, so many recent novels that have been categorized as "literary fiction" end up revealing themselves as poorly written, using contrived plots and simplistic characters. So often I finish reading and am disappointed.

But not this novel. The characters had a depth and also a familiarity and filled with the grace and flaws that make us all wonderfully human. There is something vaguely Harper Lee and JD Salinger about one of the characters, so readers who love these authors will likely connect with this story. The plot was simple and realistic, yet fresh and intriguing. I enjoyed reading and was engrossed in this novel from start to finish.

Yet, perhaps what I loved best was how this author offers a vision into the lives and the minds of people who understand, see, and relate to the world differently than most of society. The reader grows in empathy and compassion alongside the protagonist for the peculiar and delightful child, Frank. I love that Johnson has written, not just a good book, but one that teaches us valuable lessons about humanity.

My Thoughts For some reason, I kept putting off reading Be Frank With Me A Novel, a book I downloaded in March 2016. The blurb obviously grabbed my attention enough for me to buy the book. So why did I wait so long?

Whatever my reluctance, I was immediately captivated by the nine-year-old boy Frank. A brilliant child with a head full of random facts, he also seemed to capture the affection of Alice, the new assistant. His strange behavior and odd costumes did not endear him to other children, but some of the staff at school found him lovable and tried to protect him from the others. However, the principal who arrived at the school late in the book was so smug and off-putting that he set off a chain of disastrous events that would change everything.

I had issues with the inappropriate and unreliable Xander, who also had his likable characteristics. His tendency to pop in and out of Frank’s life made me very curious about how he came to be part of this dysfunctional group.

Alice, as our narrator, offered her own theories as she, too, questioned Xander’s role. Was he a former lover of Mimi’s? Was he Frank’s father?

Mimi was self-absorbed, unreliable, and definitely unlikable most of the time. But then she would do something wonderful and make you question everything you thought you knew about her and her family.

Tragic events bring the story to an unexpected denouement, and then we are left trying to imagine what will happen to the characters. A 4.5 star read for me.
Be Frank With Me is the best book I've read in some time. The story line is different too. Frank is a very interesting character and one that I loved. I'd still like to know how he's doing now. All of the characters are a totally different style too. Who can think up an aging writer has a child of special needs that dressing up in suits etc to go to school? The mother is special too with how she cares for Frank. Then when her agent sends someone to help with Frank so she can write again, another special character comes to life. This was just a great read!! For a first book from this author, I hope she writes many more - and let me know when she does!!
