Black Rubber Dress A Sam Jones Novel Lauren Henderson 9780609804384 Books
"Black Rubber Dress" is the 2nd title in the Sam Jones series, but it is the first that was available to American readers. Lauren Henderson's Samantha Jones has a lot in common with her namesake from the hit American TV show "Sex & the City"--she's sassy & brash; independent, fearless and armed with a supreme self-confidence that makes her a real man-magnet. Her very short skirts also help. But her name aside, this Sam Jones reminds me even more of Carrie Bradshaw. Sam IS Carrie--if Carrie lived in a grungy warehouse studio in boho section of London instead of a walk-up in a boho section of New York, and if Carrie made arty sculptures out of industrial metal instead of word-smithing a sex column. Like Carrie, Sam manages to attract all sorts of wrong men?all the more tragic that some of these deadbeats are quite literally . . .dead. In the course of extricating herself from these corpses, Sam gets herself into many scrapes, some hilarious and some life-threatening, but no matter what the situation, she always meets it head-on in a smashing outfit. Armed with her unquenchable chutzpah, sartorial panache and always, always a fabulous pair of shoes, our Sam rises above grim circumstances, and lives to love yet another unsuitable man and stumble across yet another dead body in the next installment.
"Black Rubber Dress" is an excellent introduction to Henderson's gutsy fashion-forward heroine and I guarantee that you will want to read all of Sam's further adventures in her four subsequent books. Regretfully I see that the paperback versions of several titles are currently out-of-print. If a digital download isn't your bag you can always do what I did and snag your copy from one of Amazon's outstanding private booksellers. Let's hope that Sam Jones will be around to entertain us for many years to come. She deserves it?and so do we.

Our heroine's name here is *Samantha* Jones, not Bridget...but if Bridget Jones lost her paranoia and self-obsession she might turn into Sam Jones! There's much of the same characterization, concern and compulsion with boyfriends, dating, sex, losing weight, career, etc., transplanted into a hip North London sculptor, and thankfully, it's a lot more entertaining to read. (Brief memo to Helen Fielding give poor Bridget a *plot* next time!) If you like British mysteries but are turned off by their usual two extremes the elderly biddy detective solving the murder of the vicar in the tea garden, or the world-weary Birmingham cop battling corruption in his own force...then this is the book, and the character, for you. Sam Jones is a breath of fresh air...a young, confident (mostly), sexy sculptor from Camden Town (no, she's *not* Cockney, as another review here has said!) Definitely an non-traditional mystery series heroine--she sniffs coke, juggles lovers, and takes action to solve a mystery not necessarily out of justice, but rather because it's her sculpture that's crushed a murder victim. The mystery takes a while to get going in the book (the murder doesn't occur until about a third of the way through, and Sam doesn't even really start taking action until two-thirds in)...but I didn't mind because the personalities, scenery, and subplots were so compelling and fun to read about--scandal, blackmail, drugs and murder inside an ultra-exclusive society family and London banking firm rope in Sam, giving her a lover from the privileged side of the tracks. For the Anglophiles there's plenty of London atmosphere from trendy Kensington to hip Camden Town, and this is definitely a character worth watching and checking in on in future Sam Jones mysteries. She reminded me a bit of Stephanie Plum in Janet Evanovich's mysteries...sexy, spunky, sometimes a little out of her depth but always entertaining to watch. Perhaps I'd like to see Lauren Henderson work on having a stronger mystery plot itself in her next book, but if the characters and scene-setting are as entertaining as this one, I'll gladly forgive her that!
Sam Jones is a sassy, smart, sexy sculptor who has a penchant for finding herself in the middle of trouble. While wearing the eponymous black rubber dress, she witnesses all kinds of death and mayhem -- and stubbornly vows to get to the bottom of it. Lauren Henderson has created a fresh and original heroine that combines the urban sensibilities of the Bridget Jones ilk (without the looking for love in all the wrong places plot line) with a taut whodunit. A quick, fun read, a good solid mystery, plenty of laughs -- Kinsey Millhone and V.I. Warshawski watch out!
The main character is an independent, intelligent female sculptor. She definitely walks on the wild side. In this novel, she ends up involved with the snooty upper class, which leads to numerous social confrontations,
I love this series and am re-reading it from start to finish for the third or fourth time. The characters are quirky and so British! Laura Henderson's writing is witty and descriptive to the point that sometimes I have to read it out loud to my husband just so he can appreciate her use of language! He is now reading the series for himself. We are old enough to remember the fashion and the music of this era and enjoy re-living it from a Brit's perspective. Sam has matured in her investigative skills as well as her choice in men as the series has progressed;-)
